I’ve mentioned more than once that math is not a favorite subject for most of our family . . . especially when it comes to my youngest daughter.

By the end of last school year, Kiera was frustrated and overwhelmed with math. She couldn’t seem to remember the new concepts she was learning from one day to the next.

It was time for a change.

So this year we tried a new approach: a slower-paced math curriculum with gentle lessons, smaller problem sets, and a kid-friendly storyline.

This one change has made such a difference in Kiera’s attitude toward math. Her frustration and overwhelm are gone, and she is developing a new confidence in solving math problems.

If this sounds like exactly what your child needs, you won’t want to miss the giveaway at the bottom of this post!

Mastery-Based Elementary Math Curriculum

Math Lessons for a Living Education is a unique combination of gentle math lessons, story-based learning, and engaging worksheets, all with a slight Charlotte Mason flair.

Master Books, the publisher of this series, has long been one of our favorite homeschool curriculum companies. (Kiera is also using their Elementary Zoology curriculum this year.)

Because we love the Master Books approach so much, it’s no surprise that we have also enjoyed their elementary math curriculum.

Gentle Math Lessons

Math Lessons for a Living Education introduces new skills at a more relaxed pace than most other math curriculums do, allowing students the opportunity to learn without struggling to keep up.

I appreciate that this curriculum gives students more time to absorb new concepts before moving on, reducing the pressure and anxiety that hinders progress.

Lessons are also relatively short, taking only 20-30 minutes a day. In my experience, this is a huge benefit—more is usually NOT better when it comes to math.

Story-Based Learning

This curriculum’s story-based learning approach is a unique feature that helps kids see the real-life applications of math concepts. A continuing story featuring Charlie, Charlotte, and their family illustrates the usefulness of math in everyday life.

The storyline continues in some of the exercises throughout the lesson, allowing students to use math in situations similar to what they might encounter in real life. I love the way this reinforces the value of learning math!

Engaging Worksheets

Math Lessons for a Living Education includes worksheets for 180 days of school. But these worksheets are a cut above the boring, crowded pages of our previous math curriculum.

Instead, many of the pages have colorful, eye-catching graphics. Others are more straightforward, with simple black print and plenty of white space. All are simple enough to not distract students from the topic they are studying.

Easy to Use

I cannot express how much I love that Math Lessons for a Living Education includes everything we need in one easy-to-use book.

The student workbook contains all the instruction, worksheets, answer keys, and a wonderfully simple daily schedule (this schedule is GOLD!). There are even some handy math manipulatives included in the back of the book.

Just ONE book is all you need.

If you feel like you need a little bit of help, there is an optional Teacher’s Companion Book that provides a plethora of teaching tips, helpful strategies, and extra guidance for teaching math at home.

You can also purchase an optional Practice Book if your child needs extra reinforcement of math concepts.

Optional Video Instruction

If you’d like to outsource teaching math, the Master Books Academy offers online video lessons for an additional fee.

While not required, it can be a useful tool for homeschool parents who don’t feel proficient at teaching math or who are teaching multiple children and just need to free up some time.
