Learning to Write a Personal Narrative
My tenth-grade son, Devin, has always been a reluctant writer. No matter how much I tried to encourage him, he never felt that he had the ability to write well.
After watching Kaylee increase her writing skills and confidence last year through the Essay Rock Star online writing course, I decided to enroll Devin in the same course this year.
Devin’s first writing assignment was a personal narrative, an essay that is often required on college applications. In spite of his reluctance, he began watching the video lessons and submitting assignments.
With one-on-one guidance and constructive criticism from his instructor, Lily Iatridis, Devin has completed his personal narrative. And wow! It’s easy to see how much he has gained from having a professional writing teacher!
Here’s the beginning of his essay:
One of my favorite quotes is, “Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there’s footprints on the moon.” I believe that if you put your heart in it you can do just about anything.
