One of the best ways to develop a student’s interest in history is to create meaningful hands-on projects that relate to the lessons.

This detailed history lapbook from Sonlight is an easy way to incorporate hands-on learning into your world history studies this year.

Sonlight World History Curriculum

As an avid reader, my daughter Kendra absolutely loves Sonlight’s literature-based approach to history. She has learned so much over the last few years by delving more deeply into history through living books.

Currently she is studying world history with Sonlight’s Level G History/Bible/Literature curriculum. (Level G is the first year in Sonlight’s two-year world history program for grades 7-9.)

Hands-On World History Lap Book from Sonlight

This year Kendra was excited to have the opportunity to try Sonlight’s World History I Lap Book, an incredible hands-on project that has added a whole new layer to her learning experience.

I’d always assumed that lap books were for elementary kids, but not so with this one! This project has been specifically designed for students in grades 7-9, which gives middle schoolers the opportunity to learn at an appropriate level.

Hands-On Learning

The world history lap book incorporates crafty elements such as coloring and gluing, as well as in-depth learning opportunities such as writing a brief paragraph.

The time spent coloring, cutting, taping, and assembling the various projects is a fantastic opportunity for discussing recent lessons. Each project is a visual reminder of what has been studied, making it easier to remember facts later.

And as a bonus, the lap book activities are fully scheduled in Sonlight’s Level G Instructor Guide, making it a cinch to fit them into your regular lessons!

Adaptable Activities

We know that not every student learns the same way, and the creators of this lap book have made full allowance for that.

For example, some activities have space to write a brief paragraph about a person or event. For those students who balk at writing or find it too difficult, there are pre-printed text boxes included that they can cut out and attach instead of writing.

Detailed Instructions

Sonlight’s World History I Lap Book kit includes a 50-page detailed instruction booklet with step-by-step directions and tons of full-color photos.

I wanted to spend time working and learning with Kendra, so I referred to the instructions and directed her step by step. However, the guide is so detailed and well-illustrated that I think most kids in the middle grades would be able to complete the activities on their own.

Convenient Supply Kit

I love, love, LOVE that almost everything we needed was included in the world history lap book kit! No delayed activities or last-minute trips to get supplies. Yes, please!

The pre-made lap book folder was a huge improvement on the homemade lapbooks I’ve seen. It was sturdy and well made, and everything fit together the way it should. My daughter especially liked the velcro tab that holds the cover shut.

All the pre-printed materials were included, many printed on different weights or colors of paper. For example, some mini-books had covers that were printed on colored paper for added visual interest. This was a HUGE timesaver!

And finally, ALL the supplies for assembly were included as well. Double-sided tape (a real game changer!), glue, brads, velcro, ribbon, glitter, and more . . . all in the box.

(The only things we had to provide were scissors, a stapler, a needle, and colored pencils. These are common household items that most families will have on hand.)
