Homeschool Music Appreciation Curriculum
Looking for a fun elective the whole family will enjoy? This homeschool music appreciation curriculum is a great way to learn more about music as a family.
Music is an integral part of our homeschool and family life. The three youngest kids have been taking music lessons for several years now, and they all play instruments in church as well.
I’ve also played the piano since high school and have a deep appreciation for hymns. I’ve even created a series of hymn studies that are used by many Christian homeschool families.
But in spite of our musical interests, we’d never really studied classical composers, music styles, or the history of music . . . until I recently discovered a wonderful music appreciation curriculum for homeschool families.
I received this product for free and was compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own; I was not required to post a positive review.
Homeschool Music Appreciation Curriculum
Music Appreciation: A Family Study is a brand new curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books. This Charlotte Mason-style curriculum is flexible enough to be used with students in grades 2 to 12—and parents will enjoy it, too!
Core Reading
This music appreciation curriculum is built around the Book of Composers, a beautiful hardback book containing stories of composers, information about various instruments, and the history of music from ancient times until now.
The book is interesting and colorful, and it reads like a story. I’ve enjoyed reading it aloud to Kendra while she colors a related picture from the resource packet.
Student Notebook
The student notebook is a key component of the music appreciation curriculum. Kendra has absolutely loved adding to her notebook after each lesson! Activities include labeling parts of instruments, coloring pictures of composers, and copying musical terms into the notebook.
The completed notebook will make a great keepsake and reference for years to come.
Music Playlists and Documentaries
Throughout the Book of Composers, there are QR codes that link to free music playlists for each period. I love that I don’t have to track down or purchase required music. It’s all available at the click of a button with no additional cost!
There are also links to free documentaries for many of the composers. Again, I’ve found it very helpful to NOT have to find these myself. The teacher guide even notes any potentially problematic content in the videos, making it a breeze for me to decide if we need to skip over something.
Other Resources
Music Appreciation: A Family Study also includes an easy-to-use teacher guide, a digital download packet, and a composition notebook (for the student notebook).
Why I Recommend This Homeschool Elective
First of all, I appreciate that this music appreciation curriculum is so easy to use. After printing the resource packet, all I had to do was open the book and read with Kendra. Then we listened to the music and completed the notebook activities. Everything was laid out and there was literally NO planning at all!
Next, I love that it is easily adapted to our family’s needs. If we don’t have time to watch every recommended video, we can just choose the most important ones and move on.
And finally, I love the Charlotte Mason approach that is used in this curriculum. When given the option between boring worksheets or a beautiful notebook for learning, I’ll choose the notebook every time.
