As my children reach the upper grades, I find myself continually challenged to keep up with their high school courses. Algebra, geometry, physical science, chemistry–I’ve coached my teens through all of them.
But even though I enjoy helping my kids with high school subjects, sometimes they just need more skillful teaching than I can provide.
I received free access to SDA and was compensated for my time spent writing this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not required to post a positive review.
Standard Deviants Accelerate: Online Learning Resource
Standard Deviants Accelerate is a online learning resource that offers a full year’s worth of supplemental course content for middle school and high school courses. Video lessons present the material in a concise, humorous way–no dry classroom setting here!
SDA courses include video lessons, review activities, quizzes, writing assignments, and tests.
Each course is divided into topics and subtopics, making it super easy to find specific videos when you need them. I love that there is even an option to print a transcript of the videos for future reference.
3 Ways to Use SDA in Your Homeschool
1. As a supplement to middle and high school courses
SDA’s video instruction is an excellent way to supplement and bring lessons to life, especially since we homeschool with textbooks. The visual aspect of the lessons is an appealing counterpoint to textbook-based learning.
My daughter is particularly interested in SDA’s homeschool algebra course. Even though she uses an instructional DVD along with her textbook, she often finds that she needs more explanation and demonstration than it provides.
Middle and high school courses are reasonably priced at $99 per year or $24.95 per month for each subject. That’s far less expensive than private tutoring or special classes!
2. As an AP course
With the soaring costs of college education these days, many homeschoolers are choosing to pursue advanced placement. Standard Deviants Accelerate offers several AP test prep courses, including AP biology, AP chemistry, AP U.S. history, and more.
Priced at only $14.95 per month, these AP courses are a very cost-effective way to get a head start on college credit.
3. As a refresher course for parents
This is quite possibly the option I am most excited about! SDA courses are absolutely perfect for homeschool parents who need a quick refresher on some of the more advanced high school courses.
I personally have a very difficult time explaining the how and why of math problems. I can work through sample problems with my kids and demonstrate the concepts, but the verbal explanation seems to elude me. I believe that SDA’s concise explanations will be an excellent tool for helping me to sharpen my teaching skills this year.
