In today’s digital world, videos and gaming are part of most kids’ lives. Many families wisely limit mindless screen time . . . but what if kids could spend that time actually learning with educational videos and games?

Our family recently discovered an online homeschool program that combines videos and games with more traditional learning materials like worksheets and quizzes. And best of all, my daughter say it is FUN!

I received this product for free and was compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not required to post a positive review. See our Disclosure Policy for more information.

BrainPOP is an online supplemental curriculum for kids in grades K-8. The program is actually divided into 2 levels:

  • BrainPOP Homeschool (grades 3-8)
  • BrainPOP Homeschool Jr (grades K-3)

For those with larger families or a wider age span (like my family!), the BrainPOP Homeschool Combo includes everything from BOTH levels.

BrainPOP was used in over 70% of schools during the pandemic, but it is perfectly suited for homeschooling online. All you need is a good internet connection and a computer, tablet, or smartphone to access the lessons.

What subjects does BrainPOP cover?

BrainPOP includes lessons for over 1100 topics, with each lesson containing a brief video and multiple application activities.

BrainPOP subject areas include these (and more!):

  • Math
  • English
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Arts & Music
  • Health
  • Engineering and Tech

Within each subject area, there are literally dozens of topics to choose from. For example, the social studies section includes history from ancient cultures to U.S. presidents, and also covers topics like elections, geography, and economics.

My daughter has especially enjoyed the unit on historical figures. The brief, entertaining videos pack in a LOT of information in a few short minutes, and the wide range of activities gives her a variety of ways to demonstrate what she has learned.

How do you use BrainPOP?

BrainPOP is super easy to use, either in structured learning or in self-directed exploration. Homeschooling online has never been easier!

Homeschool teachers have a parent dashboard where they can assign individualized lessons to each child or even create an online “classroom” where multiple students can learn the same thing.

When the parent creates an assignment, it automatically shows up in the student dashboard as a clickable link that opens the assigned video, quiz, or activity.

For example, I recently assigned my daughter the video about Nikola Tesla, followed by the accompanying quiz. When she opens her dashboard, she can see exactly what needs done and complete the work independently.

All teacher information, such as completed activities or quiz results, is automatically displayed in the parent dashboard for easy management. I love that I can have all the info about multiple students available in one place!

What kind of learning activities does BrainPOP have?

My kids prefer a “get-it-done” approach to some subjects, so worksheets and quizzes are a good option for us for those subjects.

But with BrainPOP, you’re not limited to just worksheets and quizzes. You can choose from a wide variety of engaging activities, such as coding, vocabulary, games, movie-making, or additional reading.

I’ve been particularly impressed with the way that BrainPOP’s activities build deeper understanding and higher thinking skills in students. Even the worksheets require thought and application of what has been learned. Two thumbs up!
