My 6-year-old daughter genuinely LOVES history, and I don’t want to dampen her enthusiasm with dry textbooks or boring busywork.

But finding an engaging, literature-based American history curriculum for younger learners is surprisingly difficult.

So when I saw this brand new American history program from Sonlight, I couldn’t wait to try it!

I received this product for free and was compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not required to post a positive review. See our Disclosure Policy for more information.

Literature-Based American History Curriculum for Kindergarten

Exploring American History: History/Bible/Literature K is a brand new American history curriculum from Sonlight. Designed especially for kindergarten and first grade, this literature-based curriculum covers a full year of history, Bible, and literature.

Over the years, I’ve spent many hours poring over Sonlight catalogs. The wonderful books captivated me; they were exactly what I’d always dreamed of using with my kids.

Now that I’ve actually used the kindergarten history spine with my daughter, I have completely fallen in love with Sonlight’s literature-based learning materials.

Sonlight Kindergarten History Spine

The history spine for the Sonlight kindergarten curriculum is a beautiful 2-volume set entitled Heroes and Happenings.

These books far surpass a regular history textbook. They are engaging and colorful, with high-quality illustrations that help bring history to life for young learners.

The content is well-written and easily understandable, even for ages 5 and 6. The books actually read more like a good story book than a history book—and that’s exactly the way that I want to teach Kiera about American history.

Sonlight’s kindergarten spine has a total of 60 chapters, each introducing a new historic person or event. Students will learn about famous people in American history, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Edison.

They’ll also learn about lesser-known Americans like Dave the Potter. (Haven’t hear of him before? No worries. You can enjoy learning along with your 5 or 6-year-old!)
