I don’t remember ever learning any rules about divisibility when I was in school. I’m still not sure whether I simply missed them, or whether they were never actually taught.

Now, more than twenty years after graduating from high school, I have been learning some basic divisibility rules along with my kids. Major timesavers!

9 Divisibility Rules to Teach Your Kids

  1. If the last digit of a number is even, then the number is divisible by 2.
  2. If the sum of all the digits in a number is divisible by 3, then the number is divisible by 3.
  3. If the last 2 digits of a number are divisible by 4, then the number is divisible by 4.
  4. If the last digit of a number is 0 or 5, then the number is divisible by 5.
  5. If a number is divisible by both 2 and 3, then the number is divisible by 6.
  6. If the last digit of a number is doubled and then subtracted from the rest of the number, and the answer is 0 or divisible by 7, then the number is divisible by 7.
  7. If the last 3 digits of a number are divisible by 8, then the number is divisible by 8.
  8. If the sum of all the digits in a number is divisible by 9, then the number is divisible by 9.
  9. If the last digit of a number is 0, then the number is divisible by 10.
