Looking back over our years of homeschooling, I can see that I’ve focused almost exclusively on teaching American history during the elementary years.

Honestly, the thought of teaching world history–especially ancient history–has felt rather overwhelming to me. The truth is that I’ve always supposed that ancient history would be boring and irrelevant for my children.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

We were recently introduced to the Project Passport series from Home School in the Woods. Never again will world history be boring, even for my elementary-aged kids!

Project Passport: Ancient Egypt is a hands-on history program with a fun travel theme that really captures the imagination. From the passport to the scrapbook of sights, every detail is designed to develop the feel of a real trip to another culture.

Project Passport: Ancient Egypt includes 25 “stops” or lessons that will be completed over 8 to 12 weeks of travel. Topics include everyday life, important pharoahs, medicine, agriculture, architecture, and so much more–everything you need to know to really experience the culture and history of ancient Egypt.

Each stop has Guide Book Text that explores the topic and a Travel Itinerary that lists all the projects for that stop. Many stops also include a Dramatized Audio Tour with Agatha, the “tour guide.”

There are more than 50 hands-on projects from which to choose throughout the trip. My absolute favorite was the Snapshot Moments in History timeline, because I love to use timeline notebooks to help my kids visualize history.

What I Love About Project Passport: Ancient Egypt

1. Everything is included.

Text, audio, printables, step-by-step directions–it’s ALL included in one easy download (or CD, if you prefer). I love that I don’t have to go looking for anything!

I also appreciate the fact that I don’t have to juggle textbook, workbook, and teacher’s manual. Yes, simple works for me!

2. It’s super easy to use.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the user interface! Literally everything is right there on the screen: the Guide Book Text, Travel Itinerary, Audio Tour, links to all necessary printables, even photos of the finished projects!

3. It’s flexible.

It’s no secret that most of my kids are hands-off learners. So why would we use a hands-on history program?

Flexibility, folks. We were able to pick and choose the projects that appealed to us. And as an added bonus, there is a fantastic book list included to enhance learning for my book-loving kids!

This flexibility one of the reasons that I expect to use Project Passport again in the future. In fact, I’m already looking forward to taking this trip with Weston in the next year or two!

I just stumbled across your blog and I sooo appreciate this post! Can you give an age recommendation for Project Passport? I know that they say it’s for older kids but I was curious if you used it with your younger one and what they thought. Thanks!
